A New Category of Paralegal: Fake!

There are signs that paralegals are being identified as a career and profession among the public. Some of them, however, are not what we might like them to be. First, there was an apparently not very good TV show centered around a paralegal and now this:

A Lincoln woman is in custody after police say she posed as a paralegal to steal money.

In August, 27-year-old Huong dao allegedly acted as a paralegal for Berry Law Firm in Lincoln. She accepted $1,000 from a 46-year-old Vietnamese woman, who speaks little English, as payment for legal services. The victim was seeking a divorce.

Investigators say Dao never gave the money to an attorney at the firm or started the legal process. She was also never employed by Berry Law Firm.

Dao was booked for felony theft by deception.

Scam artists have been posing as attorney and doctors for ages, so I suppose a case can be made that this is a bad event, but a good sign. Not that I’m making that case, mind you.
