NY State Paralegal Day?

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

Several states now have special days recognizing the contributions of paralegals to the legal system and the public. I do not have a complete list (if your state has one please let me know,) but have posted about Pennsylvania’s and Washington’s Paralegal Week, and Paralegal Day proclamations in Ohio and Mississippi. New York state has had paralegal days in the past, but apparently it’s a year-to-year sort of thing. If you are from New York you can now assist the Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations in establishing a 2013 paralegal recognition day, according to this announcement in the NYCPA’s Paralegal Buzz newsletter:

Do you want to showcase the support of your law firm, business or employer in a significant way to the New York State Legal Community? Then consider supporting the Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations by joining us to obtain a proclamation for Paralegal Day for paralegals in New York State.

For more details on how to be listed as a supporter please visit www.empirestateparalegals.org and click on “News and Events” to see how your firm or business can be featured on the proclamation that will be signed by Governor Cuomo.

If you have any questions please contact Cynthia Bynum @ 347-974-2874 or via email esapaprimary@nyc-pa.org.

I do hope you will join Cynthia, NYCPA, and ESAPA in this effort. While proclamations such as these may seem trite to some, they are one step in building “self-esteem” for the profession and greater awareness among the public of the essential role paralegals play in our legal system.

California Paralegal Day Celebration

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The San Francisco Paralegal Association’s website announces a Paralegal Day celebration this Friday, June 18th. I’m a fan of declarations establishing a day to recognize the contributions of paralegals to the legal profession and the communities they serve and I’m a fan of celebrations. This celebration is particularly noteworthy because it appears to involve the San Francisco Bar Association acting together with the paralegal association. The keynote speaker, Michael P. Carbone, Esq.,’s topic is “Paralegal Utilization,” a frequent topic here. I’d love to hear from anyone who attends and takes notes on the speech. If it’s good perhaps we can prevail on Mr. Carbone to go a guest post for this blog – or at least crib a post from the notes!

I can’t end this post without noting that the brochure for the celebration contains this notice:

***BRING ITEMS FOR OUR ADOPTED PARALEGALS SERVING IN IRAQ***
(Beef jerky, toiletries, gum/hard candy, paperbacks, stamps, notepaper, single serving powders drink packs, band aids)

Even if you do not attend the celebration, San Francisco paralegals, send over an item or two from the list with a colleague who is attending.

Ohio Paralegal Day

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Monday, May 17th,  is Paralegal Day in Ohio by proclamation of the governor. It is being celebrated by paralegal associations and educational institutions across the state (“Ohio “Paralegal Day’ 2010″ in just about any general search engine is likely to hit a location near you if you are in Ohio).  One such celebration in Columbus is an all-day joint venture of the Paralegal Association of Central Ohio and the Columbus Bar Association featuring, ” speakers on legal topics, writing skills, resumes and interview techniques and webinars on software programs …[and]… the annual Paralegal Day Luncheon with a hot buffet … featuring Honorable Kimberly S. Cocroft, Franklin County Common Pleas Court, as the keynote speaker.”

While reviewing the notice of this event I noticed this on the Columbus Bar Association’s site:

Paralegals are invited to become joint members of the Columbus Bar and the Paralegal Association of Central Ohio (PACO). As associate members of the Bar, paralegals can benefit from the educational and networking opportunities offered by participation in Columbus Bar meetings, events, and programs.

I am aware of and have posted about other states with proclaimed paralegal days, and one other bar association that provides for paralegal membership. I’m sure my list of states with proclaimed days is incomplete and I hope there are  more bar associations that include paralegals in their membership. If you are aware of a state with proclaimed paralegal days or other bar associations with paralegal members, please let me know. Both are signficant steps forward in the quest for appropriate recognition of paralegals as a profession.
